Topic review - When does the term "baby" end?
Author Message

I have a coworker who uses the term baby for her 3 year old when trying to elicit sympathy. She's a real user and is always trying to get things for free or discounted by telling people she is a single mom (btw she's single bc she cheated on her husband and he divorced her).

I think there is a difference between referring to a child as a baby as an "age", and using it as a term of endearment. My sister is the "baby" of the family though she is 26. However, no one actually legitimately considers her a baby. I am just relieved I am not called "the old one"! Though I am referred to as the "oldest" at times where appropriate.

The months thing, partly it is because their doctors and they themselves will use "months" until they are three years of age or something (36 months) to gauge growth and progression at certain times. A child doing something at 13 months may be different than them doing it at 19 months, though in both cases they are a "year old". Still, in normal usage I find it odd when people still use months past about 1 1/2 - 2 or so when they respond to someone asking their kids age.

Mom still calls me her 'baby girl'. I've tried both politely and directly to make her stop.

Sigh :?

I agree. Once it can walk and doesn't have to be carried, it's no longer a baby.

In my opinion, once it starts walking.

I'll be 46 next month and my mother still introduces me as "the baby one" since I'm the youngest of six kids. I prefer the way my dad phrases it, "...and this one here is the least one."

My mother referred to me as the baby of the family right up until she died......I was 48 years old at the time, I wasn't offended by it..

Pet owners that refer to their animals as their babies makes me sigh and shake my head though, it's hardly surprising that that the childed then think pets=child substitute.

LOL. I'm going to be 456 months next week.

On topic, I'd say after the kid turns 2 you should cut out the "baby" moniker.

Someone should totally do some adult birthday cards for that! "Fabulous at 480 months!"

Totally agree with the OP, which really made me laugh. But I vote for 1 as the cut off for both being a baby and for being referred to in months! The whole point of months is that there's no years to count yet, surely? So 1 should be the end of that.

My mom calls me her baby sometimes when she's feeling mushy, but I don't think we're talking about the same thing. I do agree that the counting months thing is a bit retarded. Kinda like when the psychotic girlfriend comes up to you and asks if you know "what today is?!" If the response is "our one month anniversary, baby!" then GET OUT. GET OUT NOW.

I agree with the OP. I've referred to my age in months just to annoy people that I think do it with their kids for too long.
