Not sure if this belongs here or in Arts & Entertainment, but it is CF-related. Our esteemed mods will do what they will with it.

I watch this show sometimes; I was watching it today, and the discussion turned to the Russell Brand/Katy Perry divorce. Katy says she is not ready for kids - I don't think she is CF, because she might want them someday, just not now. Russell said that there is no point in being married if you're not going to have kids. That just scored him a million asshole points in my book, and Katy is well rid of him.

Anyway, the discussion was - IS there a point to getting married if you don't intend to have kids? I was surprised that the discussion was pretty much CF-positive. I stood up and cheered when Aisha Tyler, one of the co-hosts, who is openly CF, spoke. She said that she has been married to the same man for 22 years, and loves being married. But she and her husband do not have kids because they made that choice together. Also, they love to be able to have sex with the bedroom door open whenever they feel like it. The other ladies were mostly in agreement, a refreshing change for a daytime talk show, where most of them are breeder-centric.

LOVE! That is refreshing! I opened this thread to expect the usual CF bash, but to hear that it went in the opposite direction gives me some hope for the world.

I don't really give a crap about kids, but sure as hell give a crap about my husband! :) The point of marriage is to be with the person you love, not to procreate! (a few people have mentioned they don't believe in marriage, and that's cool if it's their thing!) I've been a romantic my whole life, and my Matt is plenty enough for me!

I've been married to DH for 22 years... We got married because we love each other and wanted to make a commitment to each other. He's also pretty much the only person I trust, we've been great friends since High School. I think I mentioned on our second date that I never wanted kids, and he said the same. It's nobody's business (especially some 2-bit comedian who isn't really very funny - and I'm a Brit) why people get married... or not.

that's awesome! i'm sorry i missed that one. i have seen on the Talk before Aisha talking about her Cfness and everyone else being pretty supportive. i remember a friend of mine's Dh telling me a while back that when he told a co-worker that him and my friend were married and not having any kids that the co-worker asked why they even got married. he answered pretty much that they got married b/c they wanted to be together and be married period. i mean who's business is it anyway? i mean people get married for all sorts of reasons and in some cases at least to me not very good ones.

indigo

ps. my Dh and i just celebrated our 14th yr. anniversary and are happily married unlike i suspect many married parents.

I have been married to my husband for almost 12 years (our anniversary in on July 22). When I met him, I was getting divorced from a guy who decided he wanted kids after all. I hear he remarried and has two kids now, good for him, glad it's not me. Anyhoo, I was the one who brought up the kid discussion when Mike and I started dating. He used to think he wanted kids when he was married to his first wife, but it never happened, and now he feels like he dodged a serious bullet - now he seems to hate kids more than I do. He had a vasectomy shortly after we got married. I have since gone through menopause, so I can't get knocked up now anyway.

We are happy. The only kids we have, have fur and say MEOW a lot. Marriage is between two people who love each other, period. Anything beyond that is a choice.

It's been eons since I had anything to do with the Catholic church, but I'm sure I recall even their take on marriage was companionship and/or procreation.....

I agree with most of what MrsPotatoHead says about Brand, only I think she's being generous about the '2-bit comedian' bit, the only thing that I find funny about him is his face....

I am home during the day,too and don't mind The Talk. Sometimes the gals are downright entertaining-LOVE Aisha! I knew she was CF a while back. She's a self admitted geek, smart as hell, hilarious, gorgeous, AND CF..? Girl crush!

Sarah Gilbert's pretty cool, too, and Sharon Osbourne is always sassy. I much prefer this to the wretched "View" with that shrieking Elizabeth Hasselbeck and the cranky old women.

I watched that annoying drag queen Wendy Williams a few times (there's some time I'll never get back!), and I tuned in to a show where she said there was no point to marriage if you're not gonna sprog. Her own mother was on that show and told Wendy she disagreed. Anyway, I stopped watching Wendy. Her show sucks, anyway.

ITA about Russell Brand. What IS up with this gnarly face? I can't believe he claims he schtupped all these women- they all had to have been seriously drunk. He's seriously fugly and never, ever funny. His ex-wife Katy is just as annoying, IMHO.

I think most of us CF will agree that marriage is about companionship and love, not solely about procreation... and that the ideal of being solely for procreation was made popular by the Catholic church (as my grandmother with 6 CHILDREN can attest to).

I LOVE KATY PERRY and think Russell Brand is a dunce... when I heard that one of the main reasons for their split was because he desperately wanted kids and she didn't (at least not now) it made me love her even more. I'm about 20 days older than Katy, and just about as goofy, and that little tidbit made me feel like I knew her LOL

If marriage is only for raising kids. Perhaps couples should get divorced when the kiddies leave the nest. I mean if there is no other point in being married and all .
