I joined a bunch of childfree/friend etc Meetup email lists for things in my area (NYC). I've never yet gone. We're a bit crazed with wedding planning and we just moved into a new apartment so free time is a bit limited. Just wondering if anybody has used them in their area.

I used it when I moved from Michigan to Las Vegas and made one friend. I joined a women's lunch group. The would meet once a month at different restaurants. It was mostly older women but I made a friend. We only got together a few times then she relocated to Phoenix for a new job. Unfortunately we didn't keep in touch.

Now that I moved to San Antonio I'm considering joining a wine group. My fiancee works for the railroad and is gone quite a bit. I'm lucky to work from home but it gets lonely being by yourself in a new city. Being introverted and not making friends easily doesn't help but sometimes it's worth pushing your comfort zone.

Since you're in NYC there will be many options and different interests. I was shocked at how many groups there were just in Vegas. I can only imagine NYC would have hundreds, if not thousands to choose from. Good luck and let us know how it goes if you do join!

I've used meetup to find dungeons and dragons playgroups before. It worked pretty well. It's very dependent on where you are geographically- I've lived in places that have zilch in terms of interesting meetups. In a big city, there ought to be a good selection to pick from, depending on your interests.

I've never tried finding a CF meetup before- mostly because I'm pretty young and most of my peers are without children at the moment. So I can't speak to any experiences with that side of things.

My DH and I found a great board game group via Meetups. We have started an additional Meetup and are enjoying that too. I would recommend giving it a try.

I have tried Meetup and I've found people with whom I can walk my dog
