Yes. I got bingoed over the weekend. By my aunt. Even though I told her repeatedly that it is physically impossible for my husband and for me to have children (even if we remarried, even if we changed our minds, hint, hint), she insisted that we needed kids, adding that children are a source of endless joy. Here is a sample of the joyful moments her two sons have made possible.
* She and her husband had to live apart for two years when he was posted to a job where no special ed was available for the oldest son. The oldest son barely graduated from high school and was in the care of psychologists for years for depression. He is now married to a woman who expects my aunt to provide babysitting, and they constantly ask my aunt for help and money. Just last week, she called me at 11 p.m. unable to sleep because of a fight between his son and daughter in law.
* The youngest son, now he takes the cake. It appears for a few years he sold pot and who knows what else from the house, beginning at the age of 16. By twenty-two, he had racked up two DUIs and wrecked two cars. He has tried every drug ever made. He is an alcoholic who lives at home and was fired from several jobs for apparent theft.
Where is the endless joy?

Next time you get bingo'd by her maybe you just remind her of some of those endlessly joyful moments. If she thinks it's legitimate to comment on your repoductive choices, then hers must be fair game too.......People in glass houses and all that..

"But they're a source of endless joy" = "But it's not fair that you get to opt out!"

Don't forget that a great number of parents suffer from selective memory syndrome.

I agree with LaTormenta. If she's going to shove her nose in your business, then give it right back to her. Ask her about all the "endless joy" of her kids and their issues. That ought to shut her up. Oh, you'll undoubtedly get the "it's all woooorrth it," but of course it's a lie. They convince themselves it's all worth it because they daren't entertain fantasies of what their lives could have been without brats.

You folks are right. I did have the desire to say something along the lines of, "Which was the most joyful moment? When Son1 demanded that you fork over $14K for IVF (even though he already had a child)? Or, when had to fish Son2 out of jail? Hmmmm..." I felt bad about saying something like that, but I had not thought about it from the perspective that she is opining on my life, so why not return the favor.

You may feel bad but it's a small price to pay to get her to shut the fuck up.
